Chapter 16 – Garden Work

“Brianna, your mother wanted me to call you. We’re going out to eat with Scott’s parents this evening. The women want you and your husband to join us, so I’m formally inviting you.”

Brianna laughed a little and copied her father’s tone. “My husband and I graciously accept your charming offer to join you at the country club this evening.”

Charles laughed a little. “Now tell me how married life is treating you.” He had been so relieved when she called him the morning after the wedding. Scott had insisted she call. Brianna had been thoroughly embarrassed, but Charles had finally been able to sleep.

“I had no idea I’d be this busy. I know I only work part-time at church, but it seems like I constantly have something that needs to be done.”

Charles immediately began to worry. “What have you been doing?”

“I picked cherries this morning, and then I made jam.”

“Brianna,” he said sharply. “I don’t want you overdoing things.”

“I won’t, Daddy, but I don’t want Scott coming home and having so much to do. He is working so hard. He wants to move up quickly.”

“That I understand, but still he is your husband. He knew when he married you that you have many restrictions. He will have to make time to do little things like that, or at least hire someone to do it, if he can’t do it himself.”

“Daddy, he is trying to save up, so we can afford something like that in a couple of years. But for now, we have to do all the work. Real people do that.”

“Your mother and I are real people. We have help because no one can do it all alone, especially not you.”

Brianna rolled her eyes and sighed. She had never felt healthier. Married life was suiting her well. “I have to mow the lawn, and then I’m finished. I’ll let Scott carry the heavy bag with the clippings. You don’t have to worry, Daddy. I’ll take it easy.”

“No, Brianna. That’s too much. You’re making your mother and I worry.”

“Dad, how could I be making mom worry when she doesn’t even know?”

“Brianna, watch your tone. You may not be living under my roof anymore, but I still demand respect.”

“It’s Friday, Daddy. Scott will finally have some time for me this weekend. I don’t want him doing yard work,” she protested.

“Brianna, I’ll take this to Scott if you don’t listen to me.”

Brianna couldn’t quite suppress her giggle. “You worry too much, Daddy.”

“Yes, I do. No more work today. Work on getting prettied up for your date with your husband tonight. We want a nice evening out.”

“Sure, Daddy. We’ll see you then.”

Brianna went into the kitchen and started to label the jars of jam she had made today.

The phone rang again. She rolled her eyes, thinking it was her father, calling to see if she were outside pushing the mower around.

She was pleased to hear her husband’s voice. “Hello, Scott.”

“My mom called me. She said we are all going out tonight.
